Falklands elephant seal survey - 2015/2016

The Elephant Seal Research Group is an independent organization of researchers dedicated to the study of elephant seals, and marine mammals at large. We are currently running various long term research projects, including:

- a study of southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) of Sea Lion Island, the main breeding colony of this species in the Falkland Islands, started in 1995

- a study of northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) of the San Benitos Islands (Baja California, Mexico), the southernmost colony of the species, started in 2001.

- a study of killer whales of the Falklands

Our research work involves both field research and lab work. Please see the Research section for details.
