The caracara project

Report on striated caracara status and reproductive success

Striated caracaras (Phalcoboenus australis) are definitely fun, but they are also one of rarest raptor species in the world (IUCN Red List). Sea Lion Island shelter a small local popolulation of caracaras, with about 20 territorial pairs. Every season we locate all territorial pairs and nests, we count eggs and chicks to estimate breeding success, and we take observation of caracara behaviour to study nest attendance, parental care, and diet.
